(Originally Presented by NONSO STANLEY ANENE)
- Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal
- A leader is the inspiration and director of the action.
- A leader is the person in the group who has a combination of personality and skills that makes others want to follow him/her
The Salt Principle
Matt.5:13: “…If you loose your saltiness, how will people taste your godliness.”
Same way, if you loose your capacity to influence/be a change agent, people will loose respect for you.
- Your relevance is in your flavour or saltiness.
Levels of Leadership
Level 1 -POSITION
The lowest level of leadership—the entry level. It’s the only level that requires no ability or effort to achieve. After all, anyone can be appointed to a position.
People who remain on the position level may find it difficult to work with volunteers. Why? Because position does not automatically result in influence, and volunteers are aware that they don’t have to follow anyone. They truly only follow if they want to.
Level 2 -PERMISSION
Based on relationship. At this level, people choose to follow because they want to. In other words, they give the leader permission to lead them.
When you like people and treat them as individuals who have value, you begin to develop positive influence with them. Trust grows, which usually leads to respect
The best leaders know how to motivate their people to get things done! Leaders who produce results build their influence and credibility.
Level 3 leaders still need to do the things that make Level 2 happen. They just add Level 3 strategies to the mix. And as they become effective at Level 3, they are ready to layer on the goals of the next levels.
The key point here is producing result driven followers through motivation.
Level 4 –PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT
Your goal at this level is to identify and develop as many leaders as you can by investing in them and helping them grow –Reproduction.
The more you raise up new leaders, the more you will change the lives of all members of the team. As a result, people will follow you because of what you’ve done for them personally.
This is the highest level of leadership and also the most challenging to attain.
Level 5 leaders create opportunities other leaders don’t. They create a legacy in what they do. People follow them because of who they are and what they represent. In other words, their leadership gains a positive reputation. As a result, Level 5 leaders often transcend their position, their organization, and sometimes their industry.
Factors That Make a Leader
Character –Who they Are
True leadership always begins with the inner person. People can sense the depth of a person’s character.
Relationships –Who they Know
With deep relationships with the right people you can become the real leader in an organization
Knowledge –What they Know
Information is vital. You need a grasp of the facts to develop an accurate vision for the future.
Intuition –What they feel
Leaders seek to recognize and influence intangibles such as energy, morale, timing and momentum.
Ability –What they can do
Followers want to know whether you can lead them to victory. As soon as they no longer believe you can deliver, they will stop following
Experience –Where they’ve been
The greater your past challenges, the more likely followers will be willing to let you lead
“The most appropriate leadership style depends on the function of the leader, the followers and the situation”
Below are some of the Leadership styles. But for the benefit of this paper, I will be concentrating on Transformational Leadership.
3.Strategic Leadership Style

- Laissez-faire Leadership
11.Charismatic Leadership; and
Unlike other leadership styles, transformational leadership is all about initiating change in organizations, groups, oneself and others.
Transformational leaders motivate others to do more than they originally intended and often even more than they thought possible. They set more challenging expectations and typically achieve a higher performance.
The Transformational Leader is:
Is a model of integrity and fairness.
Sets clear goals.
Has high expectations.
Provides support and recognition.
Stirs the emotions of people.
Gets people to look beyond their self-interest.
Inspires people to reach for the improbable.
ELEMENTS of Transformational Leadership
Purpose-driven; Role Model; “Walk-the-talk”.
The transformational leader serve as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize his or her ideals
Inspiring; Inspire followers.
Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers. These leaders are also able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals.
People-driven; Genuine concern for needs of followers.
Transformational leadership also involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, transformational leaders keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition of the unique contributions of each follower.
Innovating; Challenges followers to be innovative and creative.
Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo; they also encourage creativity in followers. The leader encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn.
“Transformational leadership inspires people to achieve unexpected or remarkable results. It gives workers autonomy over specific jobs, as well as the authority to make decisions once they have been trained.”
Inspirational: Inspire workers to find better ways of achieving a goal
Mobilization: Can mobilize people into groups that can get work done
Morale: Raise the well-being and motivation level of a group through excellent rapport
