Be Grateful Even When Life is Hard

Gratitude is easy when life is good, when everything works according to our plans, when we feel like God has answered our prayers, when our plans become successful, when our relationships is juicy, when you receive a big check, at the news of child birth, successful marriage etc.  It is all good and easy to give thanks when the food is on the table, etc. It is easy to feel grateful when life is easy but when disaster strikes, feelings of gratitude go into extinction.  When life is going well, we celebrate and magnify the goodness, we go to church and do thanksgiving for the good things God has done for us. But what about when life goes badly? In the midst of hard and tough moments we forget God and many curse God even, the question is can one feel grateful under such dire circumstances?

Beloved do you know that, In the face of demoralization, gratitude has the power to energize and the power to heal. This virtue can also help us cope with hard times. Though quite difficult to find in the moments of crisis but extremely rewarding. No one “feels” grateful that he or she has lost a job or a home or good health or in marital crisis.  But being grateful is a choice. Yes, this perspective is hard to achieve but it is worth the effort if you can try.

Beloved, our major problem is that we often focus our attention on the things we do not have, rather than being grateful for the things we do have.  We spend most of our precious times to worry and cry over our difficult situations, instead of using them to thank God for the little things He has done for us. Let us always be grateful to God. One thing with gratitude is that it delights the heart of God and attracts unlimited favour from God.  When you are knocked back by life, find any little thing that is working and cling to it, the breath in your body, a place to sleep, the food you ate, the friends that helped you, the eyes to see with, a friend to call. Give thanks for these little things. Just a minute will be enough to shift you to a place where you can better deal with the challenges before you. Show gratitude also towards others and you will find that it gets returned. The easiest way to remain positive is to bless God at all times (psalm 34:1).

Beloved always realize that among all the things happening, you that you are still alive, and there are many in the mortuary, always realize that you have a family that still surrounds you, there are some who do not know who their parents are, there are some who lost their parents at tender age, there are still many  orphans suffering today. When you feel like killing yourselves, remember there are many who are lying on the road without a place to sleep, there are many who wander from one place to another seeking for solace. When you think God has abandoned you, remember many don’t have eyes for vision, nor legs, nor hands, etc some are tucked in the wheel chair for years.

If you are complaining that you don’t have money, remember those who have no single food to eat, remember the beggars on the streets, if you are a beggar, or you have a physical disability, remember those lying critically ill in the hospital. If you are sick, remember that many are in the mortuary already. You still have chances of survival. We do not know the value of what God has been doing for us until we lose those things. When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself. There is always something to be thankful for because you will find that there are positives in every single day. No matter how badly your life seems to be going, there will always be something in your life that you can be thankful for.

Finally, whatever happens to us, be thankful that they are happening because they are all part of life. Be thankful that you are alive to experience these things. They may give you more insights even, they may carry information, you need at the moment. Even if it is something bad that is happening to you, be thankful that you are getting that experience, because there is always a lesson to be learned with every bad experience that we have. Just because one aspect of your life is falling apart, does not mean your entire life is falling apart. Begin to look at life differently. When you are thanking God for every little you have, You apply for more.

Whenever life throws something in your way, you should always grasp it with both hands and be grateful that you have that opportunity because many other people are not as fortunate. Everything in your life is something to be thankful for. Take a moment to think about all of the experiences and opportunities you have had in your life. You will find that there is more to be thankful for than you have realized because these things are often overlooked. Everyone will experience ups and downs in life because ups and downs are inevitable. That is what life is all about and it is all part of the experience. Be thankful that you are here and that you are able to experience those ups and downs because that is all part of life. Life is a gift and you are blessed to be walking on this earth today. Never take anything for granted, including your existence. Be grateful beloved despite the challenges today.

There is always light at the end of the tunnel.

May God give us the grace to continually live in gratitude, and overcome our challenges. Amen.
