Breakfast with the Word Wednesday Week 2 in Ordinary Time of the Year Shorter Version

In today’s Gospel (Mark 3:1–6), Jesus enters the synagogue and meets a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees watch Him closely, hoping to accuse Him if He heals on the Sabbath.

Knowing their evil intentions, Jesus asks whether it is better to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it. They remain silent. Jesus then heals the man, choosing mercy over fear.

Instead of rejoicing that a life was restored, the Pharisees go out and begin to plot how to kill Jesus. Jesus knew the danger ahead, yet nothing stopped Him from doing good. This teaches us an important lesson: we should never allow fear, opposition, or threats to stop us from doing what is right.

Not everyone around us means well. Some people come close not to learn or support, but to watch, criticize, and pull others down. This happened even in the synagogue. In the same way, not everyone we meet in church, at home, or at work has good intentions. Still, we must remain focused on worshipping God and doing good.

Jesus reminds us that it is always better to save life than to destroy it. Even when people misunderstand us, envy us, or see us as rivals, we must keep choosing goodness. In the end, it is our good deeds—not our silence—that will speak for us.

May God give us the grace to always do good, even if it means standing alone. Amen.
