Breakfast With the Word –Monday 20th Week Ordinary Time Shorter Version
Matthew 19:16-22
Today’s Gospel reminds us to have a true hunger for eternal life. Many people focus only on earthly success, pleasures, and achievements, forgetting that this life is temporary and that our souls are destined for eternity.
The rich young man approached Jesus with an important question: “What good work must I do to receive eternal life?” This shows that he desired something beyond worldly possessions. Jesus first reminded him to keep God’s commandments — to live a life of love, obedience, and righteousness.

However, when Jesus asked him to detach himself from his possessions and follow Him, he became sad and walked away. His possessions had become more important to him than eternal life.
The lesson for us is that anything we place above God can become a barrier between us and Him. We must learn to detach ourselves from things that take us away from God and attach ourselves fully to Christ.
As we work hard to succeed in this world, let us not forget our ultimate goal — eternal life with God. Let us examine our lives and ask: Do I truly hunger for God? Am I willing to sacrifice anything that separates me from Him?
May God give us the grace to put Him first and lead us to the joy of eternal life. Amen
