Breakfast With the Word Monday First Week Ordinary Time of the Year C Shorter Version
Mark 1:14-20
To “come after” Jesus means more than simply following Him physically. It means aligning our lives with His—living as He lived, doing what He did, and forming a close relationship with Him. When Jesus says, “Come after me,” He is calling us to imitate Him and make His way of life our own.
Jesus proclaims that the Kingdom of God is already here and invites us to respond by repenting (turning away from sin) and believing in the Gospel. To believe means to trust Jesus completely, accept His words as true, and obey them. A true follower takes Jesus as a model, guide, and mentor.

When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John, He transformed them from fishermen into fishers of men. In the same way, He calls each of us today to work for God’s Kingdom and help bring others closer to Him. Our lives should reflect love, peace, unity, and righteousness—not hatred or division.
Coming after Jesus demands an immediate and willing response. The apostles said “yes” without delay, and that decision changed their lives forever. We too meet Jesus daily—in His Word, the Eucharist, prayer, and everyday experiences—but we often fail to respond.
To truly come after Jesus, we must say “yes” to Him, obey His Word, and allow Him to guide our actions. It is a call to humility, love, forgiveness, and a life that touches and transforms others.
May God help us respond faithfully and follow Him wholeheartedly. Amen.
