Breakfast With the Word Ash Wednesday Shorter Version
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season, a time when the Church reflects on the suffering, passion, crucifixion, and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It reminds us that no matter who we are or what we possess, we are dust and to dust we shall return. The ashes placed on our foreheads call us to repentance and faithfulness to God.

Lent is a season to reconcile with God by restoring our broken relationship with Him. As St. Paul teaches, we are ambassadors of Christ, yet we often neglect His grace. Through repentance, sincere sorrow, fasting, prayer, and good deeds done without hypocrisy, we are invited to return to God with all our hearts.
The biblical use of sackcloth and ashes shows true repentance — a deep, heartfelt sorrow for sin. Like Daniel, Job, David, and the people of Nineveh, we are called to genuine conversion, not mere outward observance. To reconcile with God must come from the heart.
May God have mercy on us and give us the grace to completely reconcile with Him. Amen.
