Breakfast with the Word Saturday 4th Week of Lent Year Shorter Version
This reflection on John 7:40–52 highlights how people responded differently to Jesus’ teaching. One group, open and attentive, recognized His wisdom and believed He could be a prophet or the Christ—even the soldiers sent to arrest Him were moved.
The other group, including the Pharisees, rejected Him because they were already convinced of their own understanding, misinterpreting Scripture and closing their hearts to the truth.

The key difference lies in openness: those willing to listen encounter transformation, while those who cling to their assumptions remain unchanged.
The reflection reminds us that misunderstanding Scripture and relying on our own limited knowledge can lead to unbelief. It stresses the need for humility, guidance from the Church, and a deeper openness to God’s word.
Ultimately, when hearts are closed, God’s word cannot take root, and faith becomes routine without transformation. Until we come to God with an open heart, the word may not make any impression on us.
We pray that God gives us the grace to know Him more. May He protect your going in and coming out today. Amen.
