Life of Saint Maria Faustina
The life of this saints that lived a short life on earth but accomplish many things and still counting is one to reflect upon especially at this week of the Novena to the Divine Mercy.
Life of Saint Maria Faustina
St. maria Faustina was born as Helena Kowalska on 25 August 1905. She was the third of ten children in Polish family. Her family were poor but highly religious.
Her Call
At age seven, during one of her visits to the church, at an exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, she felt a strong call by Christ for her to join a religious life.
Her parents denied her of this privilege because of her age and finance. She struggled as a teenager to make a living for herself and to enter he Convent.
At age 20, after working to get the money for her Religious Habit, she was admitted into the Convent of the sisters of Our Lady of Mercy as promised by the Mother Superior.
Life as a Nun
Upon admission into the convent, she took the religious name Sister Maria Faustyna, which is popularly spelled as Faustina in English.
She was to be a nun all her life. She suffered from an illness which was later found to be tuberculosis till her death. She was appointed as a Gardener in the Convent and was tasked in growing Vegetables.
While in the Convent, she would give her meals to some villagers who come to beg for meal at the Convent gate.
She was not loved by her sisters in the Convent but the apparition of Christ strengthens and encourage her to push on. Her sisters also dislike her because of her apparitions with Christ.
Her Contribution to the Divine Mercy Devotion
The divine Mercy Devotion will not be complete anywhere it is mentioned without the name of this Young Polish Nun Maria Faustina being called.
She was the one that Christ used to bring about this Devotion to His Mercy to the world. She had many Apparitions with Jesus where he told her about the Devotion and His mercy.
Her Diary
St. Maria Faustina Famous Dairy also known as Divine Mercy in my Soul contains all her thoughts, Visions with Jesus, His Instructions and a guide in the Devotion to the Divine Mercy.
This Diary started when she visited Father Michael Sopocko at the confessional and narrated all she had been seeing. Fr Michael asked her to go be tested by the Psychiatrist who confirmed her to be sane.
From that moment, He ask her to put down all that she sees and hear from Jesus into writing hence, the Diary. Inside her diary, St. Maria Faustina wrote about Christ the Divine Mercy Incarnate, the Divine Mercy Sunday, Chaplet, Novena, Image and lots more.
Fr. Michael Sopocko was the First Priest to celebrated the Feast of Divine Mercy by the approval of His bishop who on that gave a sermon on Divine Mercy with St. Maria Faustina in His Audience that Day. Fr. Michael Sopocko is known as the Promotor of Divine Mercy.
Her Death
Her illness became severe in the year 1938. She was later sent to Sanatorium in Pradnik for what was to be her final stay till death.
She died at age 33, on 5 October and was buried on 7 October at Krakow’s Basilica of Divine Mercy.
Moral Lesson
In her daily life, she was to become a doer of Mercy, bringing joy and peace to others and by writing about God’s mercy, she was to encourage others to trust in Him and thus prepare the world for his second coming.
Canonization
St. Maria Faustina was beatified and canonized by Saint Pope John Paul II on April 18, 1993 and April 30, 2000 respectively.
Her feast day
St. Maria Faustina feast day is celebrated on 5 October.
She is also the Patron of Mercy.
