If God says that, Do It. Reflection on the Feast of Saint Patrick

Breakfast with the Word – Feast of Saint Patrick

Luke 5:1–11

Today the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Patrick, who was born in Britain and taken into slavery in Ireland at the age of sixteen. Despite many hardships, he remained faithful to God and later became the great missionary who brought Christianity to Ireland. Through his strong faith and trust in God’s word, he courageously preached the Gospel. Because of his missionary influence, he is also remembered as the second Patron of the Nigerian Church.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus meets Peter and other fishermen who had worked all night without catching anything. After teaching the crowd, Jesus asked Peter to put his net into deep water. Though tired and doubtful, Peter obeyed the Lord’s word. Because of that obedience, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

Like Saint Patrick, Peter trusted in the word of God. Their lives remind us that even in moments of disappointment, struggle, and silence from God, we must continue to trust and follow His word. When we obey God, we discover that His word brings peace, healing, blessings, and salvation.

So, let us today emulate Saint Patrick and Peter. To do this is the surest secret of salvation and abundant blessings. May God help us to emulate the life of Saint Patrick. May He give us the strength to remain obedient to His word. Amen.
