Breakfast with the Word Monday Second Week Ordinary Time of The Year Shorter Version
Mark 2:18-22.
In today’s Gospel, people questioned Jesus about why His disciples did not fast like the disciples of John and the Pharisees. Jesus replied that fasting is not suitable when the bridegroom is present. A wedding is a time of joy, not mourning. By calling Himself the bridegroom, Jesus was declaring that He is the long-awaited Messiah they had been fasting for.
Jesus then used the images of a new cloth and new wine to teach an important lesson. New things cannot fit into old ways. He came to make everything new, not to patch the old. With His coming, the focus shifts from outward religious practices to a living relationship with Him.

The Pharisees believed holiness depended on strict observance of the Law, such as frequent fasting. But Jesus shows that true spirituality is not measured by how much we fast or how strictly we keep the law, but by how close we are to Him. His presence brings joy, mercy, grace, and salvation—not sorrow and burden.
With Jesus, old ways of self-righteousness give way to love, mercy, and a personal relationship with God. It is no longer about how far we go in religious duties, but how sincerely we walk with the Lord.
Finally, Jesus invites us to let go of the past—our sins, hurts, and failures. He makes all things new. When we cling to the past, we limit God’s work in us. But when we remain close to Jesus, He renews us and leads us forward in freedom and joy.
May God grant us the grace to stay close to Him and live as new creations in Christ. Amen.
