Let Us Behold the Lamb of God

Let Us Behold the Lamb of God

(Second Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year A) Shorter Version

Today’s Gospel centers on John the Baptist whose mission was clear: to point away from himself and direct everyone to Jesus

Seeing Jesus approach, John proclaims, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

With these words, he reveals both the identity and mission of Jesus.

Calling Jesus the Lamb of God recalls the Old Testament sacrifices and the Passover lamb whose blood brought salvation.

Jesus is not a conquering warrior but the self-giving Savior, who takes upon Himself the sins, guilt, and brokenness of humanity. His sacrifice brings forgiveness, freedom, and new life.

The command “Behold” is not optional, it is an invitation and a call to action “now”. To behold Jesus means to look to Him with faith in moments of sin, suffering, regret, and despair. He alone can take away what weighs us down and restore us to God.

John also testifies to the “Holy Spirit descending and remaining on Jesus”, confirming Him as the Messiah and the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. This same Spirit empowers believers to live transformed lives and to bear good fruit.

Like John the Baptist, “we are called to be living witnesses” not drawing attention to ourselves, but pointing others to Christ. When we truly behold the Lamb of God, our lives change, and through us, others are led to hope, mercy, and salvation.

In every weakness, failure, or fear, let us behold the Lamb of God.

He is our salvation, our mercy, and our peace.

God bless You.
