Luke 16:19-31: Faith In God Alone May Not save You. Thursday 2nd Week Lent

Breakfast with the Word Thursday Second Week of Lent Shorter Version

In Gospel of Luke 16:19–31, the parable of the rich man and Lazarus teaches that the rich man was not condemned simply because he was wealthy, nor was Lazarus saved merely because he was poor.

The real issue was total neglect. The rich man ignored the suffering at his doorstep, refusing to respond with compassion. His sin was not an evil act he committed, but the good he failed to do.

This message applies to everyone. God blesses us—materially and spiritually—not just for ourselves but to serve others. When we ignore the needy, remain silent in the face of injustice, intimidate the weak, or refuse to use our gifts to build God’s kingdom, we become like the rich man.

As Epistle of James reminds us, faith without good works is dead. At the end of our lives, there will be judgment, and our faith must be proven through love and action.

May God have mercy on us and give us the grace to live by this word. May His blessings never forsake us. Amen.
