Breakfast With the Word Friday 2nd Week of Lent Shorter Version
A tenant is someone who occupies and takes care of a property that belongs to another. In the Gospel of Gospel of Matthew 21:33-43,45-46, Jesus tells the parable of a vineyard owner who leased his vineyard to tenants. When the owner sent servants to collect the harvest, the tenants beat and killed them. Finally, when he sent his son, they also killed him. Through this parable, Jesus shows how the religious leaders rejected the prophets and would eventually reject Him.

Jesus explains that the leaders of the people were only tenants entrusted with God’s vineyard. Instead of faithfully caring for God’s people, they behaved as if they were the owners, ignoring God’s messengers and misusing their authority. Because of their hardened hearts, the kingdom would be given to others who are willing to listen to God.
This message also applies to us. Like the tenants, we often forget that we are only caretakers in this world. Everything we have is a gift from God, yet many live as if they own everything and can do whatever they want. Our life on earth is not a right but a privilege, and one day we will give an account of how we used the gifts God entrusted to us.
Just as the tenants betrayed the landowner, we too often betray God through our actions and unfaithfulness. God bless you and give us the grace to understand that our time on earth is limited. May we remain close to Him. Amen. 🙏
