Breakfast With the Word Saturday 9th Week Ordinary Time of the Year shorter version
God looks at the heart, not outward appearances.
1. The Scribes vs. The Widow
Jesus warns against scribes who do religious things for praise, status, and self-promotion. They look holy outside, but their hearts are far from God. In contrast, the widow gave two small coins — all she had. She didn’t do it for approval. She gave quietly, from a pure heart, motivated by love for God.
2. Key Lessons from the Widow’s Mite
• She gave in secret – But God sees even hidden good deeds. 1 Cor 15:58
• Her motivation was God – She gave everything because she trusted Him, not because others were watching.

• She gave from the heart – It wasn’t the amount, but the love and sacrifice behind it. 2 Cor 9:6-7
• She sought God’s approval, not man’s – Unlike the scribes who worked for people’s praise.
3. For Us Today
• God examines motives. Worship, helping others, or service done for popularity, political gain, or selfish reasons misses the point.
• Everyone has something to give. It’s not only about money — time, talent, service, encouragement, prayer all count when done with a pure heart.
• Give cheerfully, not under pressure. Whether big or small, do it for God. Jer 17:10 – “I the Lord search the heart… to reward each person according to their conduct.”
Bottom line: It’s not how much you give that matters to God, but the heart behind it. Do all for God, not for show.
