Breakfast With the Word Friday of the 17th Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Matthew 13:54–58
In today’s Gospel, Jesus returned to His hometown and taught with great wisdom. Although the people were amazed, they refused to believe in Him because they were too familiar with His background. They saw only the carpenter’s son and failed to recognise the Son of God. Because of their lack of faith, Jesus performed only a few miracles among them.
Lack of faith means that we do not fully trust God or believe that He can answer our prayers. It can make us grow tired of praying, take the Mass and other sacred things for granted, or seek quick solutions elsewhere. Faith, however, opens our hearts to God’s grace and gives us strength during difficult times.

The people of Jesus’ hometown also remind us not to underrate those who are close to us. Sometimes family members, friends or neighbours refuse to support someone because they think they know the person completely. In doing so, they may reject someone God has chosen to become a source of blessing.
Overfamiliarity can also weaken our respect for God, His Word and His ministers. God can speak and work through anyone He chooses. We should therefore listen with humility instead of judging the person through whom His message comes.
Faith is the doorway to miracles, while unbelief can prevent us from receiving God’s blessings. Let us trust God wholeheartedly, especially when we face problems, delays or disappointments.
May God forgive our unbelief and grant us the grace to grow stronger in faith and trust in Him.
