Breakfast with the Word Tuesday Week 1 in Ordinary Time of the Year Shorter Version

Mark 1:21–28

Authority is the power to command and be obeyed. Anyone who truly has authority speaks with power, and obedience is expected.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches with real authority—unlike the scribes. His words amaze the people, and even evil spirits recognize Him and obey immediately. When Jesus commands an unclean spirit to leave a man, it obeys at once, leaving everyone in shock and wonder.

This shows that Jesus has authority over everything—spirits, nature, and all creation. Yet, while evil spirits obey Him instantly, human beings often only marvel at His words without obeying them.

The reflection challenges us to ask ourselves: Do we truly live under the authority of Jesus? If we did, obeying God would not feel like a burden. True freedom from sin, fear, and bondage comes only through total obedience to Jesus.

Living under His authority means choosing Him every day, loving Him despite challenges, and honoring Him above all else. Many people hear about Jesus and feel amazed, but their lives remain unchanged.

Let us accept Jesus wholeheartedly and listen to Him. May God have mercy on us and grant us the grace to overcome all temptations that draw us away from Him. Amen.

If you want, I can also make this suitable for parish sharing, bulletin publication, or daily meditation.
