Breakfast with the Word – Monday, Third Week of Lent Shorter Version
Gospel of Luke 4:24–30
Standing for the truth is often difficult because it can bring hatred, opposition, and misunderstanding. For this reason, many people prefer to remain silent, pretend, or avoid confronting evil so that they will not offend others or be rejected.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus returns to His hometown of Nazareth. The people expect Him to perform miracles as He did elsewhere. Instead, He tells them the truth, reminding them that no prophet is accepted in his hometown. He cites the examples of Elijah helping the widow of Zarephath and Elisha healing Naaman the Syrian, showing that God’s grace is not limited by people’s expectations. The people become furious at His words and attempt to kill Him, but He passes through their midst and goes away.
This passage teaches us that many people prefer miracles and praises rather than hearing the truth that challenges their lives. When the word of God exposes our sins or faults, we sometimes feel personally attacked and become angry instead of reflecting on it.
Even today, those who speak against injustice, oppression, and immorality are often criticized or opposed, not because they are wrong but because truth is hard to accept. Yet, standing by the truth is the path to freedom and righteousness.
Only the truth shall set us free. So when you always stand by the truth, people may attack you, hate you, and say all sorts of things against you, but do not be depressed. Like what happened to Jesus today, there is nothing man can do to you if God does not allow that. In the end, the truth of the whole matter will reveal itself. God always vindicates the innocent.
