Breakfast With the Word Saturday 10th Week Ordinary Time of the Year
Matthew 5:33-37
Today, Jesus continues to lead us into the deeper meaning of the commandments. After the discussion on murder, adultery, cutting off, and divorce, He leads us more into the discussion on taking oaths and swearing. He says:
‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you: do not swear at all, either by heaven, since that is God’s throne; or by the earth, since that is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great king. Do not swear by your head either, since you cannot turn a single hair white or black. All you need to say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the evil one.
The Understanding
We live in a culture in which the truth is always hard to say. We live in a culture in which we constantly desecrate the truth. Sometimes to force the truth out, people go into taking oaths and swearing.
Sometimes to prove that our hands are clean we invoke the name of God using words like “God will be my judge ” I swear to God” “only God knows” etc.
So, for these and many other things that we do, Jesus says are not worthy of His disciples. Jesus says “let your yes be yes and your no be no.
1. If we are falsely accused, Jesus said before “blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets and accused them ( Matthew 5:11-12).
Also, Jesus suffered the same fate. Many people today are suffering because of false accusations. People are accused wrongly, let us always say and stand strong on the truth, even when things go wrong. Jesus expects that your yes be your yes and your no is your no. Also, involve your God and let God fight your battle.
One day the Truth shall be Uncovered
Today, we desecrate and bastardize the truth . Let your yes be your yes. Today, even those who are to protect the defenceless, the poor, the widows, the helpless etc have joined hands to intimidate and accuse falsely.
Sometimes to prove the falsity of the accusations, the victims try to swear. But do not forget that no truth can remain uncovered, one day it will come to the open.
Many Christians are on this bandwagon. You intimidate people and frame them up because you think you have the position of power, always know that no earthly position lasts forever and nobody knows tomorrow. One day, the truth shall be uncovered.
2. Also, sometimes when we do something, to protect our personality, we hide, we lie, we swear, sometimes using the name of God. Jesus says that such type of life is not worthy of his disciples. Therefore, let your yes be yes and your no is your no. One day the truth shall be uncovered.
3. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) His word is Truth (Psalm 119:160). But truth has been slaughtered at the altar of selfishness and corruption. The bible says “He will judge the intentions of our heart for there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account (Hebrews 4:12-13).

Matthew 5: 17-20. Living the Way God wants
As A Christian This is What You Are
If We Can Stand On the Truth.
If we can stand on the truth, the truth will set us free. It is not always good to know that something is right and you pay a blind eye to it. It is not always advisable that if you say the truth of what is happening, you keep your mouth shut because of fear.
The more we close our mouths, the more things go wrong. The more things go wrong, the more we suffer. If we can stand on the truth and say no to evil. There will be a change. Always let your yes be your yes and your no be your no. Let us not deviate to the right today and tomorrow deviate to the left. At last, only the truth shall set us free.
2. Be truth-tellers. Let your “yes” mean “yes” and your “no” mean “no.”
Don’t tell half-truths or little white lies. When you make a promise to someone, live up to that promise. When you give your word, live your word. This is what differentiates us from others. It is not always easy but we have chosen to be a light to the world.
May God bless you dearest and give us the grace to overcome all temptations, so that we shall be a light to the world. Amen.
