Breakfast With the Word Friday Second Week of Advent
Criticism is simply people’s disapproval of something you did or said. There is one way to avoid criticism according to Matthew 11:16-19. Criticism comes into effect when people’s sole interest is to find a fault.
Hence, they listen or read with the sole intention of finding something to fault, analyse and judge you. One of the factors that easily affects us psychologically is when we live on people’s assessment of who we are.
Sometimes, what is still keeping many today in their hiding zones is the fear of what people will say or think about them. Sometimes our minds are so immersed in people’s evaluation of who we are that it also overrides those positive things we can do.
Many of us today are so afraid to do something positive because we fear what people will say and think about us.

In the Gospel.
In the gospel, Jesus compares this generation to children in a marketplace who call one another but they do not respond.
They played the flute and sang for them but there was no response. They accused John the Baptist of being possessed by a demon because He wasn’t eating and drinking and yet Jesus came mingling with tax collectors, ate and drank with them. Hence, they accused Him of being a drunkard, a friend of sinners and tax collectors.
From the gospel today, in Matthew 11:16-19, Jesus was also worried about this psychological menace in His time.
The truth is that there is nothing you will do, that people will not criticise. They will surely criticise and fault you. Let it not stop your good intentions. This is normal.
If you like, feed the whole world, save lost souls, help the helpless etc many people will still look for something to talk about. Let it not stop you. God knows your heart. Even Jesus Christ and John were not safe in their own time. Never think that everybody will like what you do. This is a myth .
Take the Positives
Sometimes, the way people present you to their hearers can be so harsh that it causes you internal discomfort. But choose to remain positive. Take the lessons therein and keep going.
Rather than allowing people to hold your gifts in a cage, instead of allowing them to pull you to the mud, stand on your feet.
Do not allow the criticisms of other people define who you are. Jesus was not stopped in His own time because of people’s approval and disapproval of what He does.
So, instead of going down, always evaluate whatever they say or do, sieve out and take the positives and correct the negatives but let us never allow people stop you from fulfilling the mission God sends you to do in this world. Let the Holy Spirit guide whatever you do.
Avoiding Criticism Leads to This
The fact today is that we cannot avoid criticism even if you try to make everyone love you, someone will still have an issue with you. Many will misunderstand you.
Therefore, avoiding criticism will only keep you at bay, make you afraid of something that does not even exist and limit your potential.
The simple truth is that no one is perfect and even those talking at your back, criticizing your name, also have others who do the same to them. No one is immune to that.
If you sincerely want to avoid criticism then do nothing, say nothing, try nothing and be nothing. The only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing.
And this is what is keeping most gifted and talented young people yet in their comfort shells and afraid to do the mission God has sent them to do.
For the fact you have something you do, not many people will love that. It is normal.
So, if you want to avoid criticism, hide your gift.
Finally, do not do things only when people are praising you. Living on praises can also be misleading. Some of them are flattery. The fact here is that what we do in life must not find its foundation on what people say or do.
After our lives here, we are not going to give account to anyone except God. To come out of the shell should not make us fear.
What people will say is not supposed to be the pivotal point. Like Jesus said, in the gospel, the outcome will prove Wisdom right.
The truth always comes at last. In everything we do, wisdom plays a pivotal role. But follow your good heart. But If you really want to avoid criticism, then do nothing and choose to remain where you are.
